What’s the Alternative to Chromebooks in School?
If you hear about students utilizing a computer in the classrooms these
days, the device most often referred to is a Chromebook. However, there are
some strong limitations to
Chromebooks that leave teachers and students alike wishing for other options. Read on to learn about the cons of Chromebooks in the classroom and how we’ve partnered up with HP for a solid alternative.

Online and Offline
Work
With a Chromebook, you’re limited to only being able to access and work
on documents when you’re connected to the internet as all documents are only
stored in Google Drive. Yes, one could invest in a wireless hotspot, but
without that, it’s much easier for students to be able to work when and where
they want, regardless of an available internet connection. A better alternative
is a notebook that can save documents or projects directly to the device.
Standard Tools
Google Docs certainly has its upsides, but it’s a lot easier to work on a
Word document (especially one that contains images) or an Excel document on a
device that has Microsoft Office installed. Manipulating the text in a Word doc
with images via Google docs can be a disaster with documents suddenly becoming
pages longer in Google docs or images winding up halfway off the page.
Printing
Because third-party software can’t be installed on a Chromebook, printing
needs to be done through a printer that’s been set up through the Google Cloud
Print system. If a school uses Chromebooks exclusively, the printers should
have been set up for Cloud Print, but most home printers aren’t set up for the
system, making it difficult for students to print from home.
