Preparing Teachers for Success in Hybrid Learning Environments
Hybrid
learning has emerged as a powerful method of educating students in the
post-pandemic era. By combining both synchronous and asynchronous models for
both online and in-present student cohorts, hybrid learning leverages the
latest video and cloud-based technologies to provide students with more personalized
forms of instruction. Over the past two years, school districts have focused
heavily on getting students back into the classrooms, either virtually or in-person.
However, teachers often face a lack of support and resources for navigating
these new environments. A recent shocking survey shows that 55% of teachers are
considering leaving their professions. Today,
more than ever, teachers need professional development (PD) and training that prepares
them for success in the hybrid classroom of the 21st century.
What is
Hybrid Learning Professional Development?
While
there’s no formal definition, Hybrid Learning PD can be described as a
systematic approach to equipping teachers with the tools, technologies, and resources,
necessary to provide optimal hybrid learning resources to students. There are a
number of blogs that have raised awareness of this need. For example, the College
of DuPage has put together a helpful guide called An Introduction to
Hybrid Teaching, which outlines best practices,
tips on planning hybrid courses, and how to structure classes and activities. Other
resources have focused on the importance of maximizing the usage of
video, which has become the mainstay of hybrid teaching. Aside from the
obvious technological emphasis, teacher PD training must also provide opportunities
for self-reflection, personalized feedback, and a focus on mind-body wellness.
